In 2019, I worked in New Zealand for a trade organization representing inshore fishers. I conducted several research projects that looked at bycatch reduction, particularly for seabirds. I was on board the vessel INXS, which was a snap-gear longliner, where we tested sensors that measured the rate at which the gear sunk (faster sinking longline gear can prevent seabird bycatch).
