Fishery Research in New Zealand

My first job out after grad school was working for a trade association that represented commercial inshore fishers in New Zealand. While there, I co-led several projects on bycatch reduction in longline fisheries, and understanding contact between fishing gear and the seafloor in trawl fisheries. After working in Alaskan fisheries for several years, it was fascinating to experience another world of fishing that was familiar in so many ways, and also fresh and unique.

Skipper Thomas Tepania hauls in a beautiful snapper on his snap-gear (ha) vessel, the F/V INXS while fishing near the town of Leigh on the North Island.

Thomas demonstrates the traditional Japanese technique "ike-jime" which kills a fish quickly and humanely.

A crew member on the F/V Steve Mayree preps the cryptos to be deployed.

A crew member hauls in a craypot on to the deck of the F/V Steve Mayree. And yes, I did think that black and white added some dramatic flair.
